It serves as a substitute for remote small exchanges, enabling cross-boundary subscriber provisioning and deferring the construction of switching offices. Alternatively, it resolves the constraints of twisted-pair cabling in terms of frequency band and transmission distance within urban areas, thereby expanding the service coverage of the switching office.
