Many people are unfamiliar with the optical terminal, but in essence, it is a dedicated device for optical-electrical signal transmission, widely used in communications, security, and daily low-voltage scenarios. Many are unclear about the definition and practical functions of an optical terminal. Below is a plain and clear explanation of the principles, classification, and development applications of optical terminals.

An optical terminal consists of two parts: an optical transmitter and an optical receiver, which are used in pairs with complementary functions:

The optical transmitter is responsible for converting ordinary electrical signals into optical signals that can be transmitted over long distances through optical fiber;

The optical receiver works in reverse, converting the optical signal transmitted through the fiber back into an electrical signal for recognition by downstream equipment.

Commonly used optical terminals are mainly divided into three categories: Telephone Optical Terminal, Data Optical Terminal, and Video Optical Terminal, all of which are professional information transmission devices widely deployed across various industries.

The optical terminal first emerged in the form of a data optical terminal. In early data transmission systems, it was mainly divided into two series: plesiochronous transmission and synchronous transmission.

Although plesiochronous transmission configured high-precision clocks at each node to unify the clock standard, slight deviations still existed among node clocks. With the rapid development of modern telecommunications services, plesiochronous transmission could no longer meet the demands for high-capacity, high-stability transmission, and synchronous data transmission emerged accordingly, compensating for the shortcomings of plesiochronous transmission and gradually replacing it.

However, synchronous data transmission systems still had significant limitations in scenarios involving non-compressed video signal access and long-distance transmission. To address this, Telephone Optical Terminal and Video Optical Terminal gradually became widespread, supplementing and replacing the application scenarios of traditional data optical terminals.
