- Hardware Management and Maintenance
Under normal circumstances, the printed circuit boards and connectors of communication equipment in normal operation should not be touched at will (except for hot-swappable boards). The daily management and maintenance of communication equipment hardware by maintenance personnel mainly involve dust removal and technical maintenance.
Technical maintenance refers to the daily observation and periodic inspection of the hardware components of communication equipment by maintenance personnel, with timely troubleshooting of any issues found. The main tasks include periodically checking equipment operating status and processor load, promptly testing and repairing suspicious components based on alarm information, adjusting circuit board positions as required by work needs, and replacing faulty circuit boards and components. In addition, software virus scanning should be performed on maintenance terminals, billing devices, and operator consoles in a timely manner to protect the security of hosts and software.
Technical maintenance of communication equipment hardware should be carried out in strict accordance with operating specifications and manufacturer instructions. In particular, when replacing circuit boards, operators should wear an "anti-static wrist strap" or touch the metal frame of the rack to discharge static electricity from their bodies before proceeding. Replaced circuit boards should be promptly placed in dedicated anti-static plastic bags. Repairing circuit boards generally requires specialized testing equipment; therefore, it is advisable to seek assistance from the manufacturer, and users should avoid disassembling them rashly. - Software Management and Maintenance
Software management and maintenance of communication equipment mainly include: adding, deleting, and modifying user data; adding, deleting, and modifying trunk routing data; periodically testing user functions; running diagnostic programs on a scheduled basis to check operating status; promptly copying and printing database information and properly storing it; cooperating with manufacturers in remote software maintenance; and performing software anti-virus and virus removal work.
Current Problems in Communication Rooms
Due to factors such as engineering design, construction investment, and human resources, some communication rooms currently have certain problems.
First, the room environment does not meet or fails to reach communication room requirements. This may be due to inappropriate site selection during the initial construction phase, or the failure to actively adjust the communication room after changes in the surrounding environment, creating potential safety hazards for the communication room.
Second, insufficient attention is paid to related supporting facilities. Most of these facilities are completed during the initial construction of the communication room based on the design. Our level of attention to these facilities is often inadequate, making it easy for supporting facilities to fail to keep up with communication construction expansion or to operate under overload conditions.
Third, maintenance personnel lack sufficient skills, training is inadequate, and practical operation is not proficient enough.
Fourth, the execution of emergency plans for a considerable number of equipment is insufficient.
Fifth, considering investment costs, the room area is difficult to change after construction is completed. This requires that the limited room space be utilized to maximize economic benefits during the design phase, which is also an area where we currently fall short.
Summary
From a layout perspective, there are three points worth noting for communication rooms. The first is to improve the reliability of equipment operation; the second is effective cable management to improve air convection channels; and the third is space and energy savings. The relationship between reliability and energy efficiency is that, by improving reliability, all associated costs are reduced, and the reduction in maintenance and management costs indirectly contributes to energy savings. At the same time, a good layout and structure can also enhance room safety. Additionally, technological foresight must be considered, with sufficient reserved space for equipment expansion to ensure future needs can be met.
