GSMA Conducts Research to Mitigate LTE and Broadcast Frequency Interference

The GSMA (GSM Association) recently released a new research study exploring ways to mitigate conflicts between LTE mobile signals and existing television services. The GSMA believes that careful planning of spectrum utilization can mitigate potential interference between mobile communications and broadcast services.

In October 2013, Brazilian regulator ANATEL allocated digital dividend spectrum to mobile communications, implementing the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) 700MHz band plan, thereby releasing a certain amount of spectrum for LTE services. After studying interference between LTE networks and television services in the Brazilian market, the GSMA found that applying appropriate mitigation techniques in potential interference areas can significantly reduce interference.

The study shows that the use of filters on ISDB-T television signal transmitters and LTE mobile base stations can significantly reduce out-of-band emissions and prevent interference; the likelihood of interference between LTE consumer devices such as smartphones and tablets and ISDB-T television systems caused by out-of-band emissions is very low; plans to avoid high-power transmissions on uplink television channels (particularly channels 48-51) will support the coexistence of LTE and television services.

Tom Phillips, Chief Regulatory Officer at the GSMA, stated: "Mobile operators want to work closely with ANATEL and the broadcast community to explore how their respective services can best coexist and ensure that the people of Brazil get the best experience from LTE services and television viewing. Through rigorous modeling, this study demonstrates that careful planning of spectrum utilization can mitigate potential interference between LTE and broadcast services."
