Difference between Optical Terminal and Media Converter

Optical Terminal is a device that converts multiple E1 (a data transmission standard for trunk lines, typically at a rate of 2.048Mbps, adopted in China and Europe) signals into optical signals for transmission. The price of an Optical Terminal varies depending on the number of E1 ports it supports. Generally, the smallest Optical Terminal can transmit 4 E1 channels, while the largest currently available can transmit 4032 E1 channels.

   Media Converter has one end connected to the optical transmission system, and the other end (user side) provides 10/100M Ethernet interfaces. Media Converters are used to achieve optical-electrical signal conversion. The main principle of a Media Converter is realized through optoelectronic coupling.

   Optical Terminals are classified into: PDH and SDH.
   PDH (Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy) Optical Terminals are low-capacity devices, typically used in pairs, also known as point-to-point applications, with capacities generally of 4E1, 8E1, and 16E1.
   SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) Optical Terminals have larger capacities, generally ranging from 16E1 to 4032E1.

   Media Converters typically have the following basic features.
     1. Provide ultra-low latency data transmission.
     2. Fully transparent to network protocols.
     3. Mostly use dedicated ASIC chips to achieve wire-speed forwarding. Programmable ASICs integrate multiple functions into a single chip, offering advantages such as simple design, high reliability, and low power consumption, enabling higher performance and lower cost.
     4. Devices mostly adopt 1+1 power supply design, supporting ultra-wide input voltage range, enabling power protection and automatic switching.
     5. Support an ultra-wide operating temperature range.
     6. Support a full range of transmission distances (0 to 120 km).
