China Mobile to Comprehensively Promote Domestic 'Wireless City' Construction
At the Shanghai World Expo Park, full wireless network coverage brought convenience to tens of millions of visitors. In the future city, anyone can easily access wireless networks anytime, anywhere, which is no longer an unattainable dream.
Li Yue, President of China Mobile Communications Corporation, stated on the 31st at the "Information Industry and Digital City" parallel forum of the Shanghai World Expo Summit Forum that the practice of the Shanghai World Expo demonstrates that building "Wireless Cities" has become a major trend in the global information and communication field, with profound significance for economic development and improving people's livelihoods. In the post-Expo era, China Mobile will comprehensively promote the construction of domestic "Wireless Cities."
Li Yue said that "Wireless Cities" will utilize multiple wireless access technologies to provide city-wide wireless network access services anytime, anywhere. Known as the fifth public infrastructure of a city after water, electricity, gas, and transportation, the "Wireless City" serves as the foundational platform for the modern service industry, an important window for government service functions, conducive to industrial development, and closely related to people's daily lives.
The Shanghai World Expo has already provided a demonstration for China's "Wireless City" construction. As the world's largest mobile communications enterprise, China Mobile will seize the opportunity presented by the Expo to accelerate the construction of "Wireless Cities" in China.
Li Yue introduced that China Mobile has a solid foundation for building "Wireless Cities." Currently, China Mobile possesses a globally leading IP core network that can be shared by 2G, 3G, LTE, and various broadband access systems; the total number of base stations exceeds 600,000, network population coverage exceeds 98%, base station fiber connectivity reaches 96%, and the total number of customers exceeds 560 million.
"By the end of 2010, China Mobile will have launched TD-SCDMA 3G networks in all cities across the country. Currently, China Mobile's 3G customer base has exceeded 15 million, and especially at the World Expo, the new-generation wireless communication technology TD-LTE performed exceptionally well." Li Yue revealed that China Mobile is currently cooperating with local governments in more than ten provinces and cities, including Shanghai, Zhejiang, Guangdong, and Chongqing, to advance "Wireless City" construction, and has established "Wireless City" portal platforms in 27 cities, promoting applications in transportation, security, environmental protection, healthcare, emergency rescue, urban management, and many other fields. In the post-Expo era, China's "Wireless City" construction will accelerate significantly.
