China's Communications Industry to Officially Enter Sixth-Generation Mobile Communication Technology

Recently, the third session of the biennial Shenzhen International Conference on Advanced Science and Technology (SICAST2011) was held at Shenzhen University, with the theme of Terahertz Science and Technology. Over 20 foreign academic experts, nearly 10 academicians, and more than 100 other attendees participated in the conference. TCL Communication and China Mobile attended as co-organizers, marking the official entry of China's communications industry into the terahertz application research field and market development stage.

Terahertz waves refer to electromagnetic waves with frequencies between 0.1 and 10 THz, located between microwaves and infrared in the electromagnetic spectrum. Before the mid-1980s, due to the lack of effective generation methods and detection means, scientists had very limited understanding of the electromagnetic radiation properties in this band. It was the last spectral region in the electromagnetic spectrum that had not been comprehensively studied and well utilized, and remains the "blank" area of the electromagnetic spectrum that humanity has not yet fully developed.

Terahertz (THz) technology will become the foundation of the sixth or seventh generation communication technology. In 2004, the U.S. government ranked THz technology as the fourth among the "Top Ten Technologies to Change the Future World," while Japan, on January 8, 2005, listed THz technology as the top priority among the "Ten Major National Strategic Goals," mobilizing national efforts for research and development. In November 2005, the Chinese government held a special "Xiangshan Science Conference," inviting multiple influential academicians in the THz research field to discuss the development direction of China's THz industry and formulate China's THz technology development plan.

At this Shenzhen International Conference on Advanced Science and Technology, TCL Communication CEO Guo Aiping was invited to attend and delivered a speech on behalf of China's industry and TCL Communication. Guo Aiping stated, "The industry has now fully entered the terahertz development and application field, and terahertz has begun to show its potential in the communications sector. TCL Communication looks forward to working with experts and scholars to develop and research terahertz science and technology, driving the technological development of the communications industry."
