PON (Passive Optical Network) refers to a network in which the Optical Distribution Network (ODN) contains no electronic components or electronic power sources. The ODN is entirely composed of passive components such as optical splitters, requiring no expensive active electronic equipment. A passive optical network includes an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) installed at the central control station, along with a set of Optical Network Units (ONUs) installed at user premises. The Optical Distribution Network (ODN) between the OLT and ONUs consists of optical fibers and passive optical splitters or couplers.

Advantages

  1. Relatively low cost, simple maintenance, easy expansion, and easy upgrade. The PON structure requires no power supply along the transmission path and contains no electronic components, making it easy to deploy, essentially maintenance-free, and resulting in significant savings in long-term operational and management costs.

  2. A passive optical network is a pure media network that completely avoids electromagnetic interference and lightning effects, making it highly suitable for use in areas with harsh natural conditions.

  3. The PON system occupies minimal central office resources, requires low initial investment, is easy to expand, and offers a high return on investment.

  4. Provides very high bandwidth. EPON currently offers symmetric 1.25 Gb/s upstream and downstream bandwidth, which can be upgraded to 10 Gb/s with the development of Ethernet technology. GPON offers bandwidth of up to 2.5 Gb/s.

  5. Large service coverage. As a point-to-multipoint network, PON uses a fan-out structure to conserve central office resources while serving a large number of users. The shared use of central office equipment and optical fibers by users further reduces user investment.

  6. Flexible bandwidth allocation with guaranteed service. G/EPON systems have a complete mechanism for bandwidth allocation and assurance, enabling user-level SLA support.
