Function of Optical Terminal: It is primarily a device that converts multiple E1 (a data transmission standard for trunk lines, typically at a rate of 2.048Mbps, adopted in China and Europe) signals into optical signals for transmission (its main function is to achieve electrical-optical and optical-electrical conversion). The price of an optical terminal varies depending on the number of E1 ports it supports. Generally, the smallest optical terminal can transmit 4 E1 channels, while the largest can transmit 4032 E1 channels.

The optical terminal commonly referred to is the one used in surveillance systems to transmit comprehensive information such as video, data, Ethernet, and audio. It is mainly divided into analog optical terminals and digital optical terminals. Based on the transmission medium, there are single-mode optical terminals and multi-mode optical terminals.

The function of an optical terminal can also be understood as follows: it is a device used to convert optical signals and electrical signals to each other, without any compression of the transmitted signals. In contrast, a network video server is a device used to digitize analog video signals, typically compressing the digital signals.

An optical terminal consists of an optical transmitter and an optical receiver. The optical transmitter receives electrical signals and converts them into optical signals for transmission over optical fiber, while the optical receiver performs the reverse. A network video server is a dedicated device that receives analog audio and video signals, which can be direct signals from cameras and listening devices, and after digital compression encoding (the popular standard being MPEG-4), transmits them over the network. Video servers typically come with an Ethernet RJ-45 interface and an optical fiber FC interface, and also feature a SCSI interface for external hard drive front-end storage. It is the optimal device commonly used in remote network surveillance systems.

An analog optical terminal modulates the amplitude or frequency of the signal to be transmitted and then converts the modulated electrical signal into an optical signal. At the receiving end, the optical signal is converted back into an electrical signal, and the signal is then demodulated to restore the image, voice, or data signal.
