ODN Overview

Brief:ODN is an FTTH optical cable network based on PON equipment. Its function is to provide an optical transmission channel between the OLT and the ONU. Functionally, the ODN can be divided from the central office to the user end into the feeder cable subsystem, distribution cable subsystem, drop cable subsystem, and optical fiber terminal subsystem.
ODN Overview

ODN is an FTTH optical cable network based on PON equipment. Its function is to provide an optical transmission channel between the OLT and the ONU. Functionally, the ODN can be divided from the central office to the user end into four parts: the feeder cable subsystem, distribution cable subsystem, drop cable subsystem, and optical fiber terminal subsystem.

In the development of FTTx, the access layer requires the construction of a massive new optical fiber distribution network, namely the ODN network. The construction cost of the ODN network is high, potentially accounting for 50%-70% of the total investment, making it a key focus of FTTx investment. At the same time, ODN is also a challenge in FTTx management. First, compared with the simple P2P structure of copper cables, ODN mostly adopts a P2MP topology, with numerous splicing nodes in the network and complex network management. Second, optical fibers are more sensitive than copper cables and are more susceptible to damage. Therefore, efficient construction, operation, and maintenance of the ODN are crucial, requiring an intelligent and accurate management solution to ensure the full utilization of the ODN network and effective protection of long-term investment. Currently, how to scientifically manage the ODN network has become a focus of attention for major operators and standards organizations such as ITU-T.
