IPTV, or Interactive Network Television, is an emerging technology that utilizes broadband cable TV networks, integrating the Internet, multimedia, communications, and other technologies to provide home users with a variety of interactive services, including digital television. Users at home can enjoy IPTV services in two ways: (1) computer, (2) network set-top box + ordinary TV. It adapts well to the rapid development trend of today's networks and fully and effectively utilizes network resources. IPTV is different from both traditional analog cable TV and classic digital TV. This is because traditional and classic digital TV share characteristics such as frequency division multiplexing, scheduled broadcasting, and one-way transmission. Although classic digital TV has many technological innovations compared to analog TV, it only changes the signal format without altering the way media content is delivered.

Key IPTV Technologies

IPTV uses a computer or set-top box + TV to receive video-on-demand programs, video broadcasts, and internet surfing. It employs efficient video compression technology, allowing video stream transmission at a bandwidth of 800Kb/s to achieve viewing quality close to DVD. This offers a strong advantage for future video-based services such as live video broadcasting over the Internet, long-distance true video-on-demand, and program source production, making it a completely new technological concept.

Problems with traditional TV broadcasting: Traditional TV is a one-way broadcast method, which greatly limits interaction between viewers and TV service providers, and also limits the personalization and immediacy of programs. If a viewer is not interested in any of the content on all channels currently being broadcast, there is no alternative. This is not only a loss of time for the viewer but also a waste of resources for the cable TV service provider. Additionally, the current practice of broadcasting specific content at specific time slots is inconvenient for many viewers. A viewer working night shifts may wish to watch the news at some time in the early morning, while a passenger preparing to board a train may want to watch a recording of a football match originally scheduled for the evening before leaving home. This is currently impossible.
