HD-SDI can achieve a transmission distance of about 100 meters over high-grade coaxial cable without repeaters, which is the farthest among various uncompressed video standards, bringing convenience to on-site use. Specifically, the advantages of an HD-SDI-based surveillance system mainly lie in:
Cables use high-quality coaxial cable, and connectors use high-quality BNC connectors. These are fully compatible with previous analog surveillance systems. An existing analog surveillance system can be upgraded to an SDI system simply by retaining the transmission lines. Of course, almost all equipment in the original analog system must be simultaneously updated to corresponding SDI devices, such as SDI front-end cameras, SDI optical terminals, SDI video distributors, SDI matrices, and SDI-DVRs. The newly constructed system architecture is almost entirely similar to the traditional analog system, providing great convenience for engineers in design and installation;
Distortion-free reliability. Unlike IP systems where video data is compressed and transmitted over the network in packets, HD-SDI video is transmitted over coaxial cable as an uncompressed signal, which is stable, reliable, and distortion-free;
HD-grade real-time images. SDI does not undergo compression, packetization, or decoding during video generation and transmission, so it does not introduce the latency of HD IP images. It is particularly suitable for applications requiring real-time surveillance, such as casinos and road traffic;
Multiplex transmission over coaxial cable. Coaxial cable can transmit not only video but also audio, allowing the video matrix and audio matrix in an analog system to be combined into one. Additionally, the SDI standard supports transmitting control signals over coaxial cable. In the future, PTZ control signals can also be transmitted over coaxial cable without the need for separate control cabling, and power may also potentially be transmitted over coaxial cable. This truly enables a single coaxial cable to carry multiple signals, saving cabling costs;
