GPON Applications
GPON-related terminal products are basically similar to EPON, with three main application categories:
(1) FTTH/FTTO terminals for key accounts and commercial users, generally referred to as SFU/SBU-type ONUs. The downstream fiber from the PON port passes through the optical splitter and connects directly to the user's ONU. One ONU serves only one user. User data services are uplinked via FE or GE ports, offering high security but also higher cost, typically targeting high-end and commercial users.
(2) FTTB terminals for concentrated new residential communities or mid-to-high-end residential areas, generally referred to as MDU (LAN)-type ONUs. Typically, several to dozens of households share one ONU terminal. User data services are uplinked via FE ports, providing relatively large access bandwidth.
(3) FTTC terminals for concentrated mid-to-low-end residential areas and industrial parks, generally referred to as MDU (DSL)-type ONUs. Typically, dozens to hundreds of households share one ONU terminal. User data services are uplinked via copper cables, providing ADSL/ADSL2+ access rates.
GPON Features
- High bandwidth and high transmission efficiency: downstream rates up to 2.488 Gbit/s and upstream rates of 1.244 Gbit/s, meeting operators' future service access bandwidth requirements. With GEM encapsulation, the overall transmission efficiency exceeds 93%.
- Single-fiber access: a single optical fiber can meet the access requirements of ONU users, significantly saving operators' fiber resources in the feeder section of the access layer.

- As a carrier-class technical standard, it has detailed requirements for equipment interoperability and provides corresponding QoS guarantees for various service types. GPON also specifies protection mechanisms at the access network level and complete OAM functions, with optical fiber automatic switching time of less than 50 ms.
- The outdoor optical distribution network contains only optical fibers and passive optical splitters with highly stable physical medium characteristics, with no active equipment, ensuring high network reliability.
- Provides a unified access platform at the access network level, reducing operators' maintenance and troubleshooting costs.
