Shandong Unicom Completes First FTTH Village
In response to the numerous problems and poor robustness of rural access layer networks, Shandong Unicom Linyi Branch recently adopted an FTTH solution to upgrade the rural access layer network, with a successful pilot in Tonglezhuang, Tanyi Town, Fei County, building the province's first FTTH (Fiber to the Home) village, achieving notable results in network quality improvement, user experience enhancement, and business growth.
Currently, PON (Passive Optical Network) technology is highly mature. Compared with other fiber access technologies, PON effectively saves backbone fiber, offers a simple network architecture, high rates, flexible networking, and good stability and scalability. FTTH extends fiber directly to the user, with OLT equipment planned for installation in rural business office equipment rooms or base stations, optical splitters placed in outdoor optical distribution cabinets, and ONTs (Optical Network Terminals) installed in users' homes. Fiber runs directly to the home, providing high access rates and rapid deployment of new services.
Tonglezhuang previously accessed the network through traditional broadband and narrowband equipment, suffering from issues such as theft of access layer network cables, lightning strikes, water ingress, and aging drop wires, resulting in frequent faults, disconnections, and slow speeds. This not only severely impacted user experience but also drove up maintenance costs due to the high volume of faults. The upgrade required minimal investment, with removed equipment and cables available for reuse, while also saving on rent, electricity, and repair materials. After the upgrade, the village saw a significant increase in business development, with monthly revenue growing nearly twofold.
