Fiber to the HomeHD Becomes a New Trend in Video Conference Development

Issues such as clarity and smoothness are constraining the development of the video conference industry. Against the backdrop of accelerated fiber-to-the-home promotion, many domestic IT companies have launched HD video conference systems, hoping to drive rapid growth in the industry.

On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, the Ministry of Science and Technology held a cultural performance titled "Songs of Praise to the Party." In addition to the main venue in Beijing, leaders and Party members from provincial and municipal science and technology departments also watched the performance via video conference systems. The Ministry of Land and Resources held a grand conference commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Party, which was conducted in the form of a multimedia video conference, with the main venue at the ministry headquarters and branch venues at its dispatched local offices. Video conference systems are changing the way people live and work through a completely different means of communication.

With the frequent holding of similar government activities and increasingly active business practices, the demand for video conferencing among social organizations has begun to grow. However, issues such as the clarity and smoothness of current video conference systems are constraining industry development. Against the backdrop of accelerated fiber-to-the-home promotion, many domestic IT companies have recently launched HD video conference systems and stepped up R&D on "Triple Play" video conference systems, hoping to drive the industry forward rapidly.

    Triple Play Video

The domestic video conference market is currently developing rapidly, attracting the participation of numerous hardware manufacturers and software companies.

Through the efforts of many manufacturers, the gap between China's video conference industry and the international level is rapidly narrowing. Some companies that started earlier and have relatively larger scale and strength have begun to continuously improve the multi-level application space of video conferencing under the new backdrop of "Triple Play." Video conferencing is expected to step out of the conference room and enter an era of comprehensive application.

Lu Yan, General Manager of Digital China System Integration Service Company, stated: "Traditional video conference systems are upgrading toward intelligence, mobility, and IP-based solutions, integrating cutting-edge communication technologies to enable video conference systems to enter a broader range of application fields." At the Shanghai World Expo, mobile video conferences could be held anywhere in the expo park, demonstrating a convenient future working environment and wireless lifestyle.

Experts indicate that video conferencing is transitioning from a professional market to a converged market. "Triple Play" enables interconnection and interoperability between different networks, devices, and content formats, making future video conference technology more highly integrated and more powerful in processing capability. The convergence of hardware-based and software-based video conferencing will advance toward intelligence with the expansion of network bandwidth and the development of video terminals. For example, the adoption of a unified TCP/IP protocol will enable IP-based video conferencing to interoperate across different networks, seamlessly integrating with IP intelligent surveillance systems and IP voice systems running on "Triple Play" platforms to achieve multimedia converged communications. The mutual integration of surveillance and voice systems can extend the "perspective" of meetings and enable effective production dispatching.

In addition, the construction of 3G and 4G mobile communication networks will drive the expansion of video conferencing into the mobile domain. "The bandwidth requirement for HD video conferencing is no more than 1.5M-2M, and the current 3G networks of the three major telecom operators can all meet this bandwidth requirement, not to mention the upcoming TD-LTE quasi-4G network," said a network technician from China Mobile.

With the support of 3G wireless internet access, the need to hold video conferences anywhere and at any time will become possible. This flexible video conferencing approach is very helpful for enterprises in handling unexpected incidents.

"In a sense, video conference systems have been upgraded to multimedia unified communication systems. They can not only hold meetings and facilitate communication, but also provide real-time on-site surveillance and command dispatching. If further integrated with IoT technologies such as video analysis, they can also achieve intelligent surveillance functions.

Industry experts believe that video conferencing is merely a technology, and the key factor affecting its development depends on changes in people's awareness and mindset.

Taking China Shenhua Energy Company as an example, Ren Yulong explained: "Shenhua has 60 branch offices. To hold a group-wide meeting, transportation, accommodation, hospitality, and venue costs would amount to at least several hundred thousand yuan, and in some cases over a million yuan. Video conferencing, however, solves the problem of high meeting costs." Shenhua's example may serve as a reference for other enterprises. Ren Yulong said: "In China, for video conferencing to be truly widely adopted, mindsets still need to change."
