All Newly Built Residential Communities in Guangzhou to Be Fully Equipped with Fiber-to-the-Home
The construction of a smart city begins with the development of its infrastructure. By 2015, broadband fiber will directly enter households in Guangzhou, with the goal of achieving a bandwidth of 30 Mbps to each home. To reach this target, the existing network is insufficient, and it is necessary to promote fiber-to-the-home. He stated that the city-wide fiber-to-the-home project is currently progressing steadily. As for whether it will increase residents' internet costs, Xie Xuening indicated that fiber-to-the-home will not add to the cost burden, and operators have promised to gradually lower tariffs in the future.
At the beginning of this year, strategic cooperation agreements were signed with telecom operators such as China Telecom, and related projects have been launched successively. He also emphasized that fiber offers the highest cost-performance ratio, and fiber-to-the-home will promote the triple play of television, internet, and telecommunications, which is also in line with the national "Optical Fiber Instead of Copper" overall strategy. The copper used in current telephone lines is an important strategic resource that needs to be conserved and protected, while fiber offers faster transmission speeds. "This is a major trend," Xie Xuening revealed.
Next year, China Telecom Guangzhou Branch will continue to implement the "Broadband China · Optical Network City" strategy, with all newly built residential communities to be fully equipped with fiber-to-the-home, and gradually carrying out fiber-to-the-home retrofits for existing residential communities. The investment will exceed 2 billion yuan, covering 500,000 household users. During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, Guangzhou Telecom will invest 10 billion yuan in basic networks.
