2010 Communication Expo Keywords: Convergence, Evolution and Splendid Terminals

On October 15, the curtain fell on the 2010 China International Information and Communication Exhibition.

At this expo, most communication elements signaling market trends no longer appeared as a single technology form. The progress of mobile Internet, IoT concepts, and triple play further stimulated the process of "cross-domain convergence." In addition, the terminal sector has clearly received significant attention from all links of the industry chain.

Convergence

Regarding convergence, Dr. Paul Jacobs, Chairman and CEO of Qualcomm, previously stated that communication technology is becoming an "enabling technology," and he believes that communication technology is driving the development of other industries.

In line with Dr. Paul Jacobs' judgment, the IoT applications that best reflected convergence during this expo were among the key highlights of exhibitors. Relevant sources stated that in the face of the trillion-level IoT market, operators and all links of the industry chain are fully prepared and ready to act.

On the operator side, China Telecom showcased industry-oriented solutions such as smart agriculture, smart healthcare, and smart water conservancy; China Mobile demonstrated Yiju Tong, Elevator Guardian, urban fire remote monitoring systems, geological disaster prevention systems, as well as School Messenger and Fleet Messenger.

On the manufacturer side, concepts such as electric vehicle smart charging stations, intelligent transportation, and smart healthcare were prominently displayed. The wearable mobile terminal exhibited by Qualcomm attracted industry attention. It was noted that Qualcomm's chips leverage high-end highly integrated processors on one hand, and on the other hand, open complete APIs to industry users such as mobile healthcare.

In addition to IoT, triple play was also a key focus of exhibitors. Earlier reports indicated that China Telecom and China Mobile had respectively established a video operations center and a video product innovation base in Shanghai to further promote triple play and three-screen interaction. Furthermore, public information showed that cooperation between China Telecom and State Grid Corporation of China was being put on the agenda, while China Unicom expanded the scope of triple play pilot projects in northern regions and fully implemented "fiber-to-the-x, copper retirement."

Evolution

It was observed that the evolution of communication technology was also a key focus of exhibitors. Concepts such as TD-LTE, LTE-Advanced, CDMA2000 1X Enhanced, and EV-DO Enhanced permeated the entire Beijing International Exhibition Center.

On the operator side, Yang Jie, Vice President of China Telecom, stated that China Telecom is intensifying the upgrade efforts and scope of EV-DO Revision B. It was reported that at the end of last year, Beijing Telecom launched the first EV-DO Revision B network on the 2.1GHz frequency band in China, and in mid-January this year, Guangzhou Telecom also launched a Revision B network.

Terminals

On the terminal front, the level of attention from exhibitors far exceeded public expectations. "First, the product categories are dazzling. Second, the product tiers are rich. High, medium, and low-end products meet the needs of different consumers," said a senior industry insider. "Most importantly, the number of participants has increased significantly, and all links of the industry chain expect to gain a share of the terminal sector."

Regarding the "increase in participants," it is worth noting that terminal manufacturers, operators, traditional communication equipment manufacturers, and chip makers all dedicated large exhibition areas to showcase their products during the expo.
