15 Operators Form Alliance to Build Submarine Cable

The submarine cable, spanning 20,000 kilometers, will connect from Singapore to France, crossing 17 countries across three continents.
15 Operators Form Alliance to Build Submarine Cable

Fifteen telecom operators from Asia, the Middle East, and Europe have jointly announced the establishment of a new submarine cable system named SEA-ME-WE 5. The submarine cable, spanning 20,000 kilometers, will connect from Singapore to France, crossing 17 countries across three continents.

According to reports, the alliance has earlier awarded Alcatel-Lucent and NEC a contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars for laying the submarine cable. The SEA-ME-WE 5 alliance aims to activate the submarine cable in 2016. It will utilize the latest 100G technology to provide a capacity of up to 24,000 Gbps.

The alliance members include Singapore Telecom, China Unicom, China Telecom, China Mobile, Sri Lanka Telecom, Thailand's TOT, TeleYemen, Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSCCL), Telekom Malaysia, Indonesia's PT Telkom, Myanmar Post and Telecommunication, UAE operator Du, France's Orange, Saudi Telecom Company, and Italy's Telecom Italia Sparkle.
