(1) Technical Advantages of OTN

The advantage of OTN lies in its proficiency in addressing ultra-long-distance, ultra-large-bandwidth transmission issues for IP services, providing transmission channels for a large number of large-granularity services such as 2.5 Gbit/s, 10 Gbit/s, and even 40 Gbit/s, which is difficult for PTN to achieve. However, OTN bandwidth allocation is also rigid, resulting in low bandwidth utilization and difficulty in handling smaller-granularity services.

The brilliance of PTN technology lies in its perfect combination of data technology and transmission technology. The high-capacity packet switching/label switching technology and QoS technology from the data domain, along with OAM management, 50 ms protection, and synchronization from the transmission domain, enable operators to maximize the technical advantages of their fundamental network infrastructure, enhancing flexibility for rapid deployment of new applications in the future while reducing costs. The advantage of PTN is reflected in the flexible access of small-granularity IP services and service aggregation/convergence, but it is not adept at transmitting a large number of large-granularity services.

Whether considered from the perspective of long-distance service transmission or the rapid growth of future IP-based services, adopting the OTN+PTN joint networking model is highly necessary. Given the numerous advantages of the joint networking model, it is recommended to adopt joint networking for the construction of metropolitan area local networks, except in areas where OTN is unavailable or cannot be extended to backbone core points in the short term. With its powerful IP service access, aggregation, and flexible scheduling capabilities, the OTN+PTN joint networking model will facilitate the evolution of metropolitan transmission networks toward a unified, converged, and flattened architecture, making it the optimal choice for operators to build next-generation transmission networks.
