GPON-related terminal products are largely similar to EPON, with three main application scenarios:
(1) FTTH/FTTO-type terminals targeting high-end and commercial users, generally referred to as SFU/SBU-type ONUs. The downstream PON fiber passes through a splitter and connects directly to the user's ONU, with one ONU serving a single user. User data services are uplinked via FE or GE ports, offering high security but at a higher cost, typically for premium and business users.
(2) FTTB-type terminals targeting concentrated new residential communities or mid-to-high-end residential areas, generally referred to as MDU (LAN)-type ONUs. Typically, several to dozens of households share one ONU terminal, with user data services uplinked via FE ports, providing relatively high access bandwidth.
(3) FTTC-type terminals targeting concentrated mid-to-low-end residential areas and industrial parks, generally referred to as MDU (DSL)-type ONUs. Typically, dozens to hundreds of households share one ONU terminal, with user data services uplinked over copper cables, providing ADSL/ADSL2+ access rates.
