The two key priorities for service providers deploying next-generation FTTH network technology are delivering diverse video services over broadband video networks to meet subscriber broadband video demands. Surveys show that 73% of service providers identify VoIP as the most favored product among FTTH optical network terminals.

A senior analyst for video broadband networks noted: "Many operators are considering whether to adopt next-generation FTTH technology and plan to use it to address future broadband deployment challenges, which has surprised most FTTH equipment vendors. In our recent global survey of service providers on FTTH deployment strategies, over half of the respondents stated they are evaluating 10G GPON technology, while a smaller number mentioned they are considering WDM PON, asymmetric 10G EPON, and symmetric 10G EPON technologies. Given this landscape, FTTH equipment vendors need to educate their customers on the advantages of next-generation FTTH technology."

Procurement planning leaders at North American telecom service providers stated that the Asia-Pacific region is deploying fiber broadband access networks using both PON and Ethernet FTTH technologies. Over the next three to four years, GPON and Ethernet FTTH technologies will be widely adopted for future fiber deployments. The service providers interviewed, along with other global top-tier fixed-line network providers, indicated they will allocate 28% of their capital expenditure to future broadband network construction.
